5.10B-RS

An inherited trait is a trait or characteristic that is genetically passed down (inherited) from generation to generation. Examples include:

  • dimples
  • tongue rolling
  • toe length (longer first or second toe)
  • left-thumbed or right-thumbed when interlocking fingers (which is on top)
  • earlobes that are attache or unattached
  • eye color
  • fur color
  • ear shape (ex. in dogs)
  • hair or fur texture
  • leaf shape
  • spines on a cactus
  • color of flower petals or fruit
  • shape of a bird's beak
Learned behaviors are behaviors or actions that a human or animal observes and replicates, because it is beneficial to them in some way. Examples include:

  • a child riding a bike
  • reading
  • speaking a foreign language
  • playing music
  • playing a game or sport
  • animals learning tricks
  • hunting prey
  • playing fetch

In case you are curious,

  • Acquired Traits or Acquired Characteristics are things such as scars, amputations, or tattoos.
  • Instincts are innate capacity of an animal to respond to a given stimuli, such as a spider spinning a web, a flower growing toward a light source, or a bear hibernating for the winter.

Differentiate between inherited traits of plants and animals such as spines on a cactus or shape of a beak and learned behaviors such as an animal learning tricks or a child riding a bicycle
