I visited your Underneath Page. Wow! I'm so impressed!  I confess that I couldn't figure out how to do the comments, so just let me tell you and your students here how much I appreciate the care that you're taking with the story. I felt so happy and proud as I read through everything that you all are saying and thinking about the book. I loved reading all the things you're discussing together.

Thank you so much.

I'm beaming.

Contact Kathi Appelt

January 26-29, 2010, School visit, San Antonio, TX

When my husband and I packed the car to drive back to the east coast, I carefully placed the book and audio cd of The Underneath up front by my purse. The cd was to make sure that Mr. Shanahan, who was driving, wouldn't miss out on the story.

It wasn't until we were in east Texas, near the Arkansas border, that I noticed the area we were driving through was surrounded by a Piney Wood Forest. "This is just like the setting in the book I want to read!" I blurted out. Then I popped in the cd, grabbed the book and we began a journey within our journey.

Kathi Appelt, the author, described a family of animals, all living under a house. I am an animal lover, so this immediately hooked me into the story. All the animals were bound together by their love for one another, which is the magic ingredient for "FAMILY." A huge part of the book deals with the Caddo Native American Tribe. It was the strangest feeling when my husband and I noticed signs along the highway during these parts that said: CADDO CREEK and CADDO CAMP GROUND.

My husband looked at me at one point and said, "You have got to be kidding me. Did you plan this to go along with the book?"   It was a fun way to read the book, and I hadn't planned it at all!

It wasn't until we were in Tennessee, the next day, that we had finished all 124 chapters of The Underneath. Without giving too much away, let me just say that there were times I cried, times I laughed, and times I wanted to throw Gar Face into the swamp myself.

My favorite line out of the entire book:

At some deep level, we're all of us connected.

Sometimes she teaches at A&M too! It would be too good to be true if we could time it so Lindsay (daughter) could take her class.

Where is she speaking in S.A.? If she can't come here, maybe we can go to her.

I don't know. Her schedule looks crazy...world-wide. When she writes me back, I'll ask her more specifics.
